Increase your knowledge of the Tideway!

Description

The Tideway Skills & Knowledge Crash Course aims to provide a good knowledge of the main risks for people navigating the Thames in unpowered craft.

Theory part of the TSK 1 includes information about tides and how they affect Thames users; weather effects, river traffic and navigation rules for paddleboarders, Kayakers and other river users; tidal river hazards and associated risks.

SUP equipment selection appropriate for the Tideway, Intro to Trip Planning, SUP paddling skills and SUP river safety skills are also discussed.

The aim of this course/session is to work towards a level of personal competence and confidence on the Tideway, be able to paddle against the tide, apply basic SUP strokes efficiently, Be confident in what to do if you needed to self rescue and demonstrate an understanding of the navigation rules and protocols on the Tideway incl. crossing the river safely, working the slacks etc.

To join this course you should have good previous SUP experience as this session will not include a lesson or guidance on the basics of paddling. If you would like to build on your personal paddling ability/technique specifically why not join one of our progression sessions or group or club trips.

Requirements

You should have some paddling experience before booking on to this session as although guided by a coach you will be expected to be proficient on a board with part of the session spent paddling against the tide (working the slacks).

You will need to shower / wash thoroughly after the session if you have fallen in or been splashed and need to ensure any open cuts are covered.

We will also need to know of any recent injuries prior to the session.

What to bring

Remember to check the weather forecast and dress accordingly.

  1. Warmer weather - gym/jogging type quick drying 'technical' clothing
  2. footwear is essential - neoprene/water shoes are best, if not a spare pair of trainers or old sandals (with a heel strap) will do. Your feet will get wet! NO FLIP FLOPS (you may lose them in the water and the river bank)
  3. change of clothes in case
  4. extra layers to put on after the activity (exercise makes us feel a bit chilly after)
  5. retainers for your glasses/sunglasses (don't lose them!)
  6. wetsuits are available on site if required
  7. sunscreen is a MUST in the summer even on an overcast day.
  8. make sure you arrive HYDRATED to your session (please start drinking water 1- 2 hrs before your session and drink plenty of water!)

See you soon on the water!
