Powerboat Training for Club Volunteers

Description

Arnside Sailing Club run powerboat and safety boat courses to train volunteers to operate our safety boats. The courses are internal and not open to public. Volunteers taking part in the courses are expected to help crew our safety boats at least once a month over the next 2 to 3 years.

The Powerboat Level 2 course provides the skills and background knowledge needed by the competent powerboat drivers. It covers launching, recovery, safety, boat handling, low speed manoeuvres such as coming alongside a jetty or picking up a buoy, anchoring, man overboard, basic knots and driving at speed. There is some theory such as basic navigation, collision regulations and tides.

What to bring

Clothing

We are not planning to enter the water except when launching and retrieving boats, which hopefully will only be at wellie depth. There is a chance of getting splashed whilst sat on the powerboat. Sitting still can get chilly.

Clothing should include lots of warm layers, waterproofs, warm hat, boots or wellies and lots of pairs of gloves (in case any get wet!

Sailing, workmen style or winter cycling gloves work well for driving. Ski style gloves are useful when sat in the boat between driving.

You will also need warm clothing when sat inside for lunch or theory sessions.

Killington tends to be a lot colder than Arnside.

There are showers at Killington Sailing Club, which require 20 coin to operate though it might be better to go straight home to warm up.

Food

There is a small kitchen with a microwave and kettles.

We endeavour to provide tea, coffee, hot chocolate and milk for warm drinks.

There are no bins on site so all rubbish needs to be removed at the end of the day.

Itinerary

Most of time will be spent on the powerboat, though there is some indoor theory.

It covers launching, recovery, safety, boat handling, low speed manoeuvres such as coming alongside a jetty or picking up a buoy, anchoring, man overboard, basic knots and driving at speed. There is some theory such as basic navigation, collision regulations and tides.
