Introduction to Touring
- LOCATION: Oxford SUP Club at Farmoor Reservoir
- GROUP SIZE: 10 people (with 2 Senior Instructors)
- SESSION DURATION: 6 Hours
- SESSION CONTENT: The Aim of this course is to work on the basic SUP skills learnt during the Level 1 lesson, and to develop skills to improve your paddling.
This 6 hour intermediate session is ‘skill and knowledge focused’ aiming to give students a safe way of getting more time on the water.
By the end of this course paddlers should be able to:
- Understand different locations to paddle and their restrictions/challenges
- Have knowledge of different touring disciplines and how to get involved
- Demonstrate an improved efficient paddle stroke
- Use a variety of strokes to maintain tracking and manoeuvrability on the water
- Navigate obstacles and third parties afloat taking into account, flow, weather and any other elements
- Have knowledge of how to plan a trip taking into account weather, flow, tide, access, 3rd parties, exit options
- Have understanding of personal gear you might take with you when touring.

Requirements
What to bring
You'll need to bring a pair of trainers or water-sports shoes to wear on your feet, along with your swimwear and a towel.
We provide wetsuits and buoyancy aids.
During the warmer months of summer you can wear shorts & t-shirts.
We'll be using 12'6" Touring Boards for this lesson. If you have your own board and would like to use it, please bring it with you.
Likewise if you want to use your own wetsuit or PFD, please bring it with you.
If you don't have your own equipment we'll provide it all for you.
Itinerary
Please check in at SUP Club HQ.
Once we've got you kitted up and ready to go we'll head over to the water.
This session will be a mixture of dry land training and water based practical paddling.
We'll start with a briefing and demo, move onto the water, then break for another dry land session before finishing off the session on the water.
You should expect to be on the water and paddling for at least 2 hours.
