Description
The Sea Kayak Award is perfect for kayakers looking to progress to a closed cockpit sea kayak and develop the practical and theory skills for coastal paddling. Run over two days (with an opportunity for assessment and certification) this course is all about developing skills and building confidence in a beautiful and dynamic environment.
Guided by a qualified and experienced sea kayak coach, you’ll develop the skills and confidence to paddle in winds up to force 3, in and in tides up to 1 knot. Through a combination of theory and practical sessions, together you’ll cover:
- Equipment – use and set up
- Route Planning- weather, tides and sea conditions, plus basic navigation
- Personal Sea Kayak Skills – techniques to allow you to effectively manoeuvre your boat
- Rescue Skills – Decision-making and sea kayak rescue
This award can be taken in a closed cockpit sea kayak or a sit on top kayak.

Requirements
What to bring
We have all the personal paddling and safety equipment you may need for this course.
You are welcome to bring your own paddling equipment and boat. please get in touch to discuss suitability.
Please bring :
- towel and swim wear (for under the wetsuit)
- cloths for changing into after your day of paddling
- food and drink suitable for a day on the sea
- sun cream/ hat and any medication you may require
- Any personal paddling equipment that you might already own.
Please note - we don’t have any changing facilities, therefore you will be getting changed on the beach so please bring a changing robe or large towel.
