As surfing is totally condition dependent we have the choice of a variety of fun activities to suit the conditions. We involve the children in this decision each day so that as well as developing their in water skills, they learn the invaluable skill of evaluating the conditions.

Listed below are a variety of the skills/lessons which give a flavour of what will be provided on a given day. The main activity session will last approx 2hrs.

    Introductory surf lesson

For those who have never surfed before or have limited experience, as long as conditions allow, we will begin our camp with an introductory surf lesson. This includes a surf specific warm up made up of games to get active and raise the heart rate. We then do some learning on the beach, followed by plenty of time putting our new skills into practice in the water.

    Subsequent surf lessons

One of the great things about surfing is that your approach and focus is entirely dictated by the conditions. Hence, our subsequent surf lessons are heavily influenced by the conditions, and the ability to understand and adapt to the conditions is always a learning point within that lesson. Here are some examples of just some of the skills which can be covered; more in-depth wave catching technique including catching unbroken waves, perfecting the “pop-up”, angling the takeoff, choosing good waves, going down the line, turning on the wave, specific manoeuvre’s (walking the board, grab rail, bottom turn, top turn, directional change, cut-back), body surfing waves (surfing without a surf board), body boarding, understanding conditions, sea safety including identifying rips.

Another note here is that everyone progresses at different rates, so our small group sizes and ability to separate beach instruction ensures that every child gets appropriate and personalised coaching.

Flat in water skills and games

If the water is flat we can still get in the sea, have tonnes of fun and learn loads about surfing! Some flat water sessions/drills we have include - paddle skills and games, board handling (eg. duck dive, turtle roll), life guarding skills.

    Surf skate and balance boards

The location for this activity is a 15 minute walk from the beach in Seahouses. We use a tarmacked area for teaching surf skate sessions. Surf skates are skateboards which are specifically designed to move like surfboards, so we can use them to teach many surf specific skills such as stance, speed generation and turning. Students also get to learn another fun activity which they can enjoy when the sea is flat. Next to the tarmacked area is a grassy area which is perfect for balance boards. Balance boards are another fun activity and we have a variety of games and drills which help improve balance and proprioception.

    Lunch

After the surf session children will have time for lunch. During this time the children will be able to eat, relax and socialise under our supervision. If ordering a packed lunch this will include a sandwich roll (ham, cheese or tuna), crisps, a piece of fruit, a juice box and a small sweet treat.

    Surf diaries

In the last half hour of each day we will spend time filling in a surf diary. The surf diary includes space for the children to note different pieces of information which effect the surf conditions. It also gives them space to describe what they learnt in their session, and make notes on what the conditions were like - this is a great way for the children to begin to understand how the forecast effects the conditions in the Sea, and when the conditions will be safe.
