  • Skills Camp for Kayakers !

    Description

    Two day Advanced Kayak Camp for paddlers that already have their Level 2 Kayak Skills award.

    When: 6th & 7th of April 2023

    Times: 10am - 3pm.

    Where:

    Location to be decided depending on water levels.

    This camp will focus on developing Moving Water Kayak Skills and Safety & Rescue Skills for Junior members of our Kayak Academy.

    We provide:

    1. Kayak and Paddle 
    2. Wetsuit
    3. Buoyancy Aid
    4. Helmet
    5. Cag
    6. Spray deck
    7. Fully qualified Canoeing Ireland Kayak Instructor 



    Requirements
    1. Level 2 Kayak Skills
    2. Be a member of the GoPaddle Kayak Academy
    What to bring

    All of your usual kayak gear:

    1. wetsuit if you have one, if not one can be provided free of charge.
    2. something to wear under the wetsuit, ie swimming togs or shorts and T-shirt
    3. extra layer of warm clothes
    4. towel
    5. solid footwear like old runners and neo or warm wool socks.
    6. any relevant medication, eg inhalers etc...
    7. packed lunch and a warm drink.
    8. something warm to wear over the wetsuit at lunch time plus a warm hat. (If it's cold out)
    Itinerary

    Over the course of the two days we will work on the following techniques:

    1. Entry and Exit
    2. Edging
    3. Forward Ferry Gliding
    4. Reverse Ferry Gliding
    5. Breaking In
    6. Breaking Out

    And Rescues:

    1. Offensive & Defensive Swimming
    2. T- Rescue
    3. Using a Throw Rope to rescue a swimmer.
    4. Manoeuvring an empty kayak between two specified points on the water
    5. Simple tows with the use of equipment.

    And cover the following Theory:

    1. Safety Rules of Kayaking
    2. How to identify - Eddies, Standing Waves, Upstream & Downstream V’s, Stoppers, and Easy River Routes
    3. River signals and commands.
    4. River Running Methods – leapfrog, herd and drive etc
