⛵ What’s it all about?


RYA Sailing Stage 1 is the perfect introduction to sailing for young people aged 8–16. Over 2 full days, beginners will learn the basics of how to sail a dinghy in a safe and supportive environment, using simple, fun exercises to build skills on the water.


No experience is needed — just bring your enthusiasm and a willingness to learn something new!

  2. Understand wind direction and basic sailing theory
  3. Build water confidence through fun, practical sessions
  4. Work towards your RYA Stage 1 certificate

🛟 Safety First


All sessions are led by RYA-qualified instructors. Safety is our top priority, and all participants will wear buoyancy aids at all times on the water. Wetsuits and sailing gear are provided — no specialist kit needed.


📩 Cancellation Policy


Cancellations must be made at least 7 days before the course start date by emailing us directly at WatersportsCentre@scll.co.uk.

No refunds will be given for cancellations made within 7 days of the course starting.


Please note: cancellations made through EOLA only will not be accepted.


Please note: there must be a minimum of 3 participants booked for this course to run. Whilst we don’t anticipate this being an issue due to the course’s popularity, if numbers are too low, we will contact you in advance.


Requirements

  1. No prior experience needed.
  2. Participants must be water confident. While they don’t need to be strong swimmers, they should be comfortable in the water and able to manage basic swimming movements.
  3. A buoyancy aid will be worn at all times during water activities.
  4. Aged 8-16yrs


What to bring

  1. Swimwear for under a wetsuit
  2. Towel
  3. Closed-toe shoes that can get wet (e.g. old trainers or water shoes – must be secure. No flip flops or sliders.)
  4. A drink and a snack
  5. Lunch if booked onto both a morning and afternoon session
  6. Sun cream (please apply before the session)
  7. £1 coin for a locker


Itinerary

  1. Arrive at the centre and meet your instructor at 10am.
  2. This course is a mixture of on the water activity with a few theory elements.
  3. You'll stop for lunch around 12:30pm for 30 minutes and then resume activity.
  4. 15:45 you'll be off the water ready to get changed to leave by 16:00
